Interwoven Nature : Mobile Memories
Interwoven Nature began in response to my surroundings at an artist residency in Sichuan China. I had returned to China after 40 years and had traveled a fair bit again. I arrived at the residency needing to calm my mind and take stock of China then and now and of me, my responses and my memories. I was thinking about how memory works, how we organise our thoughts and our belongings. I was reading and being influenced by Staging the Archive by Ernst Van Alphen. What makes an archive and how memory can never be without change, bias and outside influences, a lot like nature really. Although this is not a socially engaged project it is a beginning for me to start working more with nature.
First came the film, then the pieces came together into a mobile, which became an installation for the exhibition with the film being projected through the mobile.
